Batting Cages: Good or Bad?
Believe it or not, sometimes really good baseball players have trouble hitting at batting cages. Many of them wonder why, but there is a logical explanation. Players shouldn't be discouraged if this happens to them.
This is typically what happens. The first round at the batting cages goes well. But then the consecutive rounds gradually get worse and worse. The mechanics go haywire and fewer balls are being hit. It would seem that with more practice you would get better.
This is not the case most of the time. That's because batting cages are very different from games or live batting practice. The body gets tired when you do several rounds. The more tired the body gets, the worse you perform.
Most batting cages offer 25 balls for every token. The balls spit out every few seconds and after just a few minutes the round is finished. Players want their experience to be longer, so they do more rounds.
This is not a good way to practice. It is unrealistic and nothing like hitting in a game. Even live batting practice is different because there is more time between each pitch. It's not bad to visit a batting cage, but there are some things you should know beforehand.
When you do visit a batting cage, here are some recommended tips. Begin with one round, and focus on your mechanics for every pitch. Rest your body for 10 minutes before doing another round. During the second round, focus on hitting the ball to different parts of the field. After that, stop for the day. Anymore than that will most likely tire your body and affect your hitting.
There are some good things about batting cages, so they shouldn't be discounted altogether. But, if you really want to improve your hitting, first consider other ways to practice. Most of all, don't let a bad day at the batting cages discourage you.
