Hockey 101

Hockey is a very popular sport. Hockey is often called ice hockey because it's usually played on ice, but people can play even without the ice. Roller hockey is the game when not played on ice.

An ice hockey rink measures 200 by 85 feet. You'll find lines painted on the ice to divide the different zones. A red line marks the middle of the ice. The blue lines mark the three zones: the defending, attacking, and neutral zones.

There are goal posts with a net at each end of the rink. There is a red line, which is called the goal line, is painted on the ice between the goal posts. The aim of the game it to make goals by hitting the hockey puck into the net using the hockey stick. A point goes to a team if the puck crosses the goal line and enters the net, also called the goal. The blue area in front of the goal that is painted in blue is called the crease.

Generally there are six players per team on the ice at one time. The three players (forwards) will line up at the front, and they serve as their team's offense. Depending on their positions, they would be called the right wing, the center, and the left wing. There are two defense men, and they are placed behind the forwards, one on the left, and the other on the right. Finally, the sixth player is the goaltender, or the goalie. The goalie generally stays in the crease to protect defensive zone, the defense men also defend the goal as the forwards attempt to make goals for the team.

There are six players from each team on the ice at one time. The three players that line up at the front of the team are called forwards and they mainly serve as the team's offense. Player number six is the goaltender, or the goalie. The goalie stays in the crease to protect the goal, while the defense men also do their part to keep the other team from scoring. Forwards and defense-men are allowed to provide both offense and defense for their team as they react to the activity of the game. At the end of three twenty-minute periods, the hockey team with the highest score wins. If there is a tie, then a 5-minute period will be given.
